HSE Austin 7th Annual Science Trip: Catalina Island Marine Institute

The Catalina Island Science Trip was exhausting & oh-so-successful!
It seems our kids touched on a bit of everything. It was overwhelming & wonderful! Highlights include:
-squid dissection
-ocean kayaking (a curious sea lion flirted between our group!)
-invertebrate lab
-plate tectonics, subduction, channel island formation & geology -marine mammals (multiple sightings of whales & dolphin pods, some 40+ in pop.)
-learned about buoyancy, how to snorkel in salt water, & fight fear
-completed a full moon night snorkel
-island ecology (ask kids about dwarfism & the island fox)
-shark & ray touch tank
-teambuilding exercises
-plankton lab
-high & low ropes course
-astronomy evening program
-challenging ridge hike
-fisheries awareness
-deep sea biology
-survived no cell service for 6 days
-discovered how humans impact marine environments
-debriefed the experiences with a memorable campfire
I believe our students are stronger mentally & physically, & exude more confidence in STEAM subjects. Thanks for supporting our crew, from buying hot cocoa to encouraging students to sign up. There is no substitute for hands-on learning.
Make science great again!”
